Yes, we like each other but she's all the way in NB, which is almost as far apart as you can get while still being in North America lol

French tank? The only one I can think of is the B1 bis, for it's the only one that wasn't actually useless.

You were right! I meant the Char B1 bis.

Here's the model I got.

Real B1 bis tanks.

Development was started in 1921. The planned specs were: 13t weight, 25mm plating, crew of 3, 75mm howitzer and a machine gun on a rotating turret. Four projects were presented in 1924, but they were rejected. The concept was changed two years later and the project's main priority was to develop an infantry tank. The planned crew increased to 4 and a radio system was included. After several delays, the prototypes were presented in 1930 and Renault's model was chosen. Char B1 had a 75mm howitzer in the hull and a 47mm AP cannon on its turret. It entered service in 1931.

A newer variant (Char B1 bis) with improved plating and a longer barrel was developed in 1936 and 369 tanks were built from 1937 to 1940.

Anyway, that means that most of our tank were light and only here to help infantry take trench, because France was readying itself for WW1-2nd round, not WW2, and the B1 bis was I think the only tank that actually had result against the Panzers.

You're right. Both the British and French thought about WWII as another WWI with trenches and stuff, so that's why many infantry tank designs with big tall treads were obsolete from the very beginning.

Another interesting fact about the B1 bis is its one-man turret, which was added in later stages of the project to counter armored enemy units. The tank commander was also the 47mm gunner and loader. This meant a lot of work for just one man, especially if he was a division commander who was supposed to coordinate several tanks at the same time.

Such a limitation makes a lot of sense in its context, though. The French favoured small turrets despite their shortcomings, as they allowed for much smaller and thus cheaper vehicles. Although the French expenditure on tanks was relatively larger than the German, France simply lacked the production capacity to build a sufficient number of heavier tanks. The Char B1 was expensive enough as it was, eating up half of the infantry tank budget, according to wikipedia.

B1 bis' biggest flaw probably was its low mobility, both tactical and strategic. Its top speed was just 25 km/h (which makes sense since it's an infantry tank) and its max autonomy was 180 km, so moving it to a different front was quite hard and took a lot of time. Railway transport could have been useful in this regard, but I guess it was very limited in France during WWII.

However, the B1 bis wasn't a bad tank at all when WWII started. Most German weapons couldn't penetrate its armor.

B1 bis armor performance

In direct meetings with German tanks the Char B1 usually had the better of it, sometimes spectacularly so as when on 16 May 1940 a single tank, Eure (commanded by Captain Pierre Billotte), frontally attacked and destroyed thirteen German tanks lying in ambush in Stonne, all of them Panzer IIIs and Panzer IVs, in the course of a few minutes. The tank safely returned despite being hit 140 times!

There's an epic medal named after Captain Billotte in World of Tanks that is awarded to players who destroy at least two enemy vehicles and survive the battle despite receiving at least five different critical hits and losing 80% or more of their hit points.

Even General Heinz Guderian was impressed by the B1 bis' performance and related in his memoirs the following incident during a tank battle south of Juniville:

Quote from: Guderian
"While the tank battle was in progress, I attempted, in vain, to destroy a Char B with a captured 47-mm anti-tank gun; all the shells I fired at it simply bounced harmlessly off its thick armor. Our 37-mm and 20-mm guns were equally ineffective against this adversary. As a result, we inevitably suffered sadly heavy casualties"

I also came across this conversation about the B1 bis in a Girls und Panzer thread in 4chan some time ago. Yup, there's a B1 bis in Girls und Panzer and it's quite awesome. :3

Relevant extract
Did it really only have 3 crew? Looks like it needs 5 minimum.

For senshado purpose, being 1 crewmember down in a B1 bis isn't such a big deal since the big hull gun is a howitzer tailored for infantry support. The actual anti tank weapon is the turret gun, so they could have a driver/radio/turret-gunner setup.

The two flaws of the B1 were its mobility (both speed and autonomy) and the 1-man turret configuration which put the tasks of loader, gunner and commander on the same crewmember.

It was still a very solid tank overall, with a decent AT gun by early war standards and a formidable armor. It didn't have much occasions to shine due to the german blitzkrieg tactics and the french tank deployment doctrine both being multiplier factors on its mobility weakness, but when it had occasions to do its job, man was it a beast.

Yep. Guderian speaks of the B1 in his memoirs as well. Never saw many of them but, oh boy, was it one hell of a painful fight whenever they came across one.

>man was it a beast.
>sinle B1 getting 13 Pz III-IV kills in a single combat even after being hit 140 times for NO damage
Yep.
The flaw of the single turret is because it usually allows the enemy to have first shot because its commander is too busy.
When your tank has enough armor that can simply ignore enemy ire and a gun that can one-shot your rivals, it becomes a non issue.
As soon as your oponent gets a gun that can defeat you, it becomes a crippling problem.
Basically, any late-war tank would chew it alive - but then again, any late-war tank would chew ANY early-war tank alive, so it's not fait to judge it using only that stick.

You've been... listening to Lindy. He's probably right on this account though.... that and the hull-gun having no left-right traverse were limiting factors.

The B1 ter took care of that, too late though.

I'm still annoyed that the Maginot manga went with the side airtake weakness myth.

I have no idea who that "Lindy" you talk about is. That's my own analysys - you should try yourself, Anon.
As for the hull's gun traverse, they added it in later models - and it was a retrograde step because now the gunner/diver had to steer the tank, THEN traverse the gun. The original B1 had a RIDICULOUSLY precse direction that amounted to gun travel. The reason they removed it was cost-cutting, not efectiveness.

Most tanks were captured and used by the Germans in the Netherlands (e.g. Operation Market Garden) until January 1945. Some tanks were recaptured in 1944 and participated in the Allied siege of La Rochelle.

Moral of the story: don't underestimate the odd-looking yet impressive B1 bis!

Somua and Hotchkiss sound familiar. Don't know much about them, though. :(

I'm not making another post about tanks (yet), so have a few girls with guns instead.
