I'll be donating to the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who are on the ground and rescuing stranded and abandoned animals in the disaster area.  Having recently known the pain of parting ways with one of my cats, my hope is that some families out there will have the joy of reuniting with their animal companions in the days and weeks going forward.

As a physician, particularly in psychiatry, my department is working with our health system and university to provided crisis and grief counseling as needed to those in our community with loved ones in the Houston area.  My role is specifically in the crisis center where students and local residents who are overwhelmed with the current events present to or are brought to for evaluation and treatment.  While families in Houston begin the recovery process, the least we can do here is to try to keep their loved ones safe and healthy.
