Hyperspace National Novel Writing Month
« on: October 03, 2017, 01:11:25 am »
November 1st begins one of my favorite times of the year - National Novel Writing month. The official goal is rather simple - write a story, or collection of related stories, which total 50,000 words or more. The rules are very much up to you - some people write 5,000 words describing a toaster to reach their word counts - but in the end so long as you're telling a story in 50,000 words or more, it's a win. The only steadfast rule is the timing - you cannot write anything you started before November 1st (Outlining is fine, but not writing!), and cannot count any words after the 30th to your count.

I'd like to do this with a couple of Hyperspace people if they're interested. Please let me know here and we'll have a good old time~ 50,000 may seem like a high goal, but it's 1,667 words a day - maybe 40-50 minutes of concentrated writing.

You can sign up at nanowrimo.org. If there are enough people interested I'll host word wars and online write ins and stuff~ I could probably even get Timmy to join. My name is Meliran on there.

Let me know if you're interested in this thread~

I might join. Maybe. I’m just now bothering to get used to the idea of ‘freetime’ and ‘taking care of myself over others’ and I’m not sure I wanna dedicate myself to something that ambitious so soon. But, it’s a month away, and I’ll have to see how I feel in that time. Could be fun, maybe finally start that one project I’ve been wanting to do for a couple years now. Even if it’s not exactly my usual sort of thing.

I'm going to say sure despite the fact that I doubt I'll actually do it. I've had several ideas knocking around, from the usual shit (fanfiction essentially) to actually half-original stuff. When November comes I'll open up a word document and see how far I get.

Ahh, here's the thread people mentioned. Well, it's something I might consider - on my own terms, anyway. Try and spend the month to get a draft up for a VN. I might start before then, I might go over time, but it could be a useful excuse to get me motivated.

Ah, NaNoWriMo... Yeah, not gonna happen with me... Got too much to do not to mention I can barely put time into my own novel idea...

50k words in 30 days... With my already stretched thin free time...

Yeah, unless something radical happens (which honestly could, seeing what's happening these days) I probably won't make it. Last time I needed 3 holiday weeks to write 50k+ words. Still, maybe I'm inspired in November, so I let's leave it with a "maybe".
Why can only the evil have empires, power and majestic theme music? I reclaim the possibility of creating the Federal-democratic-free Empire! A (democratic) tyranny fueled by the Power of Love!

Started writing. You can check it out here: Home

For those like myself, how many is 50k words? An example of X number of chapters in lotr or the hobbit, for instance.

The Hobbit is 97,022 words, so it's roughly half of it. The most common analogue is The Great Gatsby - that is 50,061 words.

Don't think I'll be doing anything major, But I think I'll post the prototypical prologue and the part of the 1st chapter for an old Stalingrad short(ish) story I was once going to write... It won't be even 1500 words as is, but whatever, short historical fiction is my bread and butter.
