You gaze into the mirror. There, you see a sturdy and fit young woman staring back at you. Clearly the result of plenty of hours working out, showing a decent degree of dedication for your own wellbeing. Having been a victim of frequent sickness and regular bouts of causeless exhaustion as a child, getting yourself into tip-top shape helped circumvent these issues to a degree. Nowadays, you not only have a life comparable to those without such detriments, but one of abundant physical health in general.

You look pretty good, too.

Once you're certain that everything is on straight, and you didn't forget to put on any important articles of clothing in your half-awake state, you turn your attention to the mark on your left hand.

You've had it as long as you could remember, that strange, oddly artistic carving that your father always seemed unwilling to discuss. Once, when he'd had a little too much to drink, you asked him about it, and he let slip that it was your battle scar, a symbol of pride for surviving a birth that claimed your mother's life. He refused to offer any explanation beyond that, and, even when you asked later, he wouldn't acknowledge even that much.

It's been aching lately. As far as you can tell, there's no reason for it, and the pain is nothing more than a distant distraction at worst, but it is certainly odd.

Heading downstairs, you spot your father at the kitchen table, cup of coffee in front of him, face pressed into a book. Something about the arcane, you're sure- he's been interested in that sort of thing your entire life. As for you,

You know almost as much as he does, having been training as a Magus most of your life.
You know a little about it, aware of the facts but having never had an interest in the 'family business'.
You don't really believe in that sort of thing, having never had any reason to think otherwise.

---

I'm sure this choice isn't important.

"You know a little about it, aware of the facts but having never had an interest in the 'family business'."

Look, mages in the fateverse suck; either you bankrupt yourself by using magic, slowly kill yourself or don't even use that much magic. All for what amounts to a peashoter unless you're one super-wizard.

We'l manage fine through the orthodox way of bashing things really hard and science.
Why can only the evil have empires, power and majestic theme music? I reclaim the possibility of creating the Federal-democratic-free Empire! A (democratic) tyranny fueled by the Power of Love!

What Marx said, if you wanna be an useful mage you need to be gifted, and as far as gift goes pragmatism and training win every time because mages are dumb, look at Kiritsugu, whatever was the name of Caster's master, and Mordred's master in Apocrypha.

Who'd believe in magic?

Heading downstairs, you spot your father at the kitchen table, cup of coffee in front of him, face pressed into a book. Something about the arcane, you're sure- he's been interested in that sort of thing your entire life. As for you, you know a little about it, aware of the facts but having never had an interest in the 'family business'.

Of course, your father always went out of his way to stress how dangerous it would be, trying to be a Magus. How you're always towing the line between life and death. You could tell he didn't want that life for you, and, when you stated plainly that you felt the same way, he seemed relieved. Still, he wanted you to be informed in case you were ever pulled into that sort of situation against your will; you're both aware that blind ignorance would inevitably lead to disaster.

Noticing you, he looks up, exhaling lightly and shutting the book. "Breakfast is ready," he says, voice soft to fit the quiet morning. Some men would have the television on, watching the news, but your old man has always prefered the silence, even for background noise.

On the table, you find a neatly wrapped sandwich, something you can take with you on the go. It's expertly made, of course; the hands that delicately prepare rituals and spells are also finely attuned for crafting other types of masterpieces. "I didn't know when you'd wake up," your father says, neutrally. "If you needed to rush to school, I wanted to make something you could quickly take with you."

It seems you could go in early, attend to some club duties, or just catch up with some acquantences. At the same time, however, you could take your time and have a brief moment at home. Thinking about it, you decide...

It would be best to go to school early, making sure you can definitely arrive on time and maybe have some fun before the hectic day really gets started.
It would be best to stay home for a little while, and give your father some company before he heads out to work. You might be a little late, but it should be fine.

It was a close vote in the end, but this path won out by a single vote~ Well, there's no use crying over paths not taken, yes? Now, how serious are we about school, and family... I wonder.
