Title: 2016 Status Report
Post by: Helrouis on December 31, 2016, 01:11:26 pm
Hello Everyone,

Happy New Year! 2016 was not really an ideal year for us, as we had to patiently wait through things which cannot be rushed. But hey, the long wait has paid off, as they are about to come to fruition!

We'll be incredibly busy once we've shown you the new opening movie this early January. Please look forward...

Oh, good idea on giving the choice between the new and original designs. While the CG work seemed pretty good, I found myself preferring the old sprites.

And honestly, while this last year has been a bit sucky for Sierra Ops, look on the brighter side: it will still be releasing earlier than the My Little Dictator it's because you've had other attractive projects, and when something doesn't work getting away of it for a bit to get some perspective always helps.

Wow, seeing this update really made my day. Im really liking the new designs :D

I like that you have both options available - it worked well in Black Closet, I felt. I've become really attached to the first versions, so even though the new sprites match the CGs, it would feel a little odd for me. Also, since they're already done, it wouldn't really cost too much in the way of programming the option in, to the best of my knowledge.

Oooh nice.

I really preferred the original ones compared to the new ones, they just look better imo.

Having an option to choose between them is real nice.

Wish the CGs also have this option though.

Whole reason for the change was because the original artist wasn't able to do the CGs for some reason, so they brought on a new one and redid the sprites at the same time to match. I believe that's what happened, anyway - Hel can confirm or correct.

Wow that sucks.

The original art style was great too... :(

I'm really attached to my avatar in the original art style myself. However, the CGs are really good from what I've seen, so I'm thankful for the options. Sometimes things don't go your way, unfortunately.

Well, the CGs are good, but the sprites just seem off to me... So yeah, i'm grateful for the options to switch sprites as well.

Though... I wonder why they decide to change the age of the characters. They're already all over 20 before except for maybe 1 or 2.

Writer here.

I requested because it didn't really fit with the setting to have people under 20 serving or holding positions that high, so this is how things turned out.

Oh, good to see we still have Youko with us. Given the messy state Sierra has been for a while I feared you had left quietly.

Naaaaah. I just have a bad habit of falling into completely silence, especially with things like forums since they tire me out and slowly start to consume my life.

On that note, Sierra's scale has massively inflated (mostly my fault), but the end result should end up being like a 300k word epic, with most of that content locked behind decisions and replaying.

I'd suggest looking at my twitter like Arraxis does if you want to see me freaking out over writing or random thoughts I have about the script.

Wow, cool. And I get it: the first year this forum completely consumed my life. I'll check twitter; I actually did it periodically some time ago, but somehow started slipping my mind.

Youko's Twitter is quite entertaining, to be honest. Nothing really in the way of spoilers, but the random thoughts regarding Sierra and what's going on are great. I'm looking forward to the bad ends! Also, hopefully skipping scripting class to write scripts is worthwhile - sometimes you can pick up something important there :D

That class is the absolute basics for FILM, and short film at that.
I either already knew what she was talking about, or it was something that only applies to short films. It's kind of a frustrating class to be in.

On the note of the characters, a lot of the information on up on the website is no longer accurate. We'll probably do a big update once the game is close to launch.

I'm more worried people are going to complain to me that they didn't get enough focus, or their characters are acting OOC. You guys have Ares characters though, so you're stuck inside side quests, sadly. :T

Don't worry Arra and Marx I'll be sure to play your side quests~

I wonder if my character's gonna end up as That One Boss... I wonder if I'll end up hating her for gameplay reasons. Going by Youko's posts, Sierra's not pulling punches with the gameplay sections.

If Dark Souls has taught me something is that you always remember the bosses that kill you at least three times.

So as long as we can't be cheesed in some way or another I'll be happy~~

And then on New Game Plus there should be a sidequest where the players have to fight both of us at the same time. Libertas Ares!

No spoilers <3

But, seriously. Storytelling with the Ares characters varies between difficult and impossible because you're not exactly sitting around having pleasant conversation. There's a very good chance you won't get to see much before the new game ++.
Title: Re: 2016 Status Report
Post by: Arraxis on March 09, 2017, 03:10:06 pm
Yeah, I understand - most of the story's from the close perspective of Junius, if not all. Either way, New Game++ will be something to work towards if that's the case! Especially if there's a defect route~

Honestly, as long as you got to do something cool with them then I don't mind~ At the beginning I wasn't sure if the characters from the "minor" backers even had a line (in fact, I'm not even sure if they actually do now; maybe you're talking about storytelling through gameplay a la Dark Souls?).

I'd love to tell story through item descriptions, but the thing is we don't actually have that many items period nor room for descriptions, so that's more or less impossible, but for now that's still up in the air.

As far as how many lines backer characters get, pretty much all of the side characters ARE backer characters. Eg. Your fellow Commodores in your fleet.

How many lines a person gets is directly related to what role and personality they picked for their character since that takes precedence over inserting them into a spot with a lot of lines. This, however, leads to rather unequal representation between said side characters, so I hope people won't be up in arms with me about including or excluding their character. That said, I've taken A LOT of liberties with the characters that do have major speaking roles, so I'm just hoping I don't get lynched for making someone's OC act OOC. lol

Honestly, that puts me at ease. There is nothing I would hate more than my backer character (or others, but yours is always the most painful one) being out of sync with the story (or breaking the immersion) due to his setting. If the "core" of the character gets across then I trust your hands far more than mine, Yoko  :).

I like that you're not going for equal representation in the name of creating a story that makes sense. Maybe it's because I know that Sera's an antagonist, if a sympathetic one, and therefore less likely to get a lot of focus, but I think that'll benefit the story and the game more than trying to get some sort of arbitrary parity between them.

I just hope everyone feels the same, because it would be pretty awful to keep the backers waiting around for so long only to feel cheated out of something.

Oh, well it does make sense in a way.

Though the only one that was under 20 was Claine iirc.

So that's why the age went up.

Good to see you're still alive, haven't seen you around here in a long time.

Well personally, the age cyanges makes sense. Its weird for me to see things like in Sunrider where the Captain of a large military vessel is a kid. Even if it was possible, then that brings into question where room for growth for a career officer would take place. And that said, only viable reason I could ser this case is if the mortality rate was pandemically high due to an ongoing war.  Anyway,  In this way i think the Sierra Ops story will be more engrossing having taken this int account 8)

Sierra's tone is quiet a bit darker than Sunrider's. While you still get the occasional hjinx or silly moments, the whole game is weighed down by an increasing sense of dread as the story progresses. Of course, that's not to say it's a depressing game to play in any sense, but it is a whole lot more grounded in reality than Sunrider is. I've tried my best to build a world where the oddities make sense, but how well I do is ultimately up to the player.

While I also appreciate the darker and more grounded storyline in Sierra, everyone always seemingly forgets that Captain Shields is around 27 in Sunrider...

A shoutout to all the junior officers out there who suddenly become Captain of a warship after expecting to be helping out with the communication arrays or something like that due to unexpected fatalities higher up :D. But yeah, it takes time to get promoted, no matter how amazing you are, unless there's a huge war with huge losses going on at the time.

Hey, I was wondering if we could get an update on the game if possible. Haven't really seen much mention of anything on Twitter lately.
