Sunrider General Discussion / A suggestion for language mods
« on: March 17, 2016, 03:39:50 am »
LANGUAGE FUNCTION

If there is still someone remember me, I made my personal translation into Chinese and asked some questions here.
Since the Liberation Day has released and I just finished it yesterday, looks like it’s time to pick up this translating thing again.

In Liberation Day, Japanese language is added.  The inbuilt language selection is much better than what I did in the language mod.  I have no knowledge in this renpy language and many people told me my language mod did not work.  That programming part was beyond my knowledge so I just pretend that did not happen.  Now I come up a new idea to solve this problem, provided I could get help from game maker.

What if add a third language “Custom” as a choice, and make a new file “Language” where translators could simply edit it to set custom language related definitions.  Then translators only need to let renpy generate a translation file, set fonts at “Language” file, finish the translation and throw that file into “Custom” language folder and tell users “download my translation file and select custom language, done”.

If possible, this could help translators who are poor programmers like me a lot.  I don’t need to stare at the dizzy renpy program, trying to find a place to add my made up language change lines, and find it not working at all.  Furthermore, if this function could also be added in “Mask of Arcadius”, that could be the best news I could hear this year.  Since Liberation Day has start as a new game, it is time for me to make a “Sunrider Introduction Chapter Translation Complete Edition”, while I still have no idea how to solve the language selection part.

TRANSLATION

Above concludes the title, and following are some of my problems in translating.

This part is about the inconsistent in English and Japanese lines.  A same line may has some different meanings between languages.  If this happens, which one is more “Official”? I don’t know Japanese language so I hope the answer is “English”  ;)

Some examples:

Icari call Kryska as soldier boy, and the Japanese word for that is 優等生.  I don’t know Japanese, but luckily as a Chinese I could recognize those Chinese characters and that word means “Good student”.  Well since I have never seen the phrase “soldier boy” before maybe they do have the same meaning?  For this one I will translate based on Japanese.

Another example is how people call Ava.  In my search, Google told me “Commander” is a naval rank equal to lieutenant colonel in army.  That means people call her rank rather than occupation.  However the Japanese word is 副長 which means vice president generally, or chief officer since they are on a ship.  In Japanese lines people call her occupation rather than her rank.

So how people call each other?  Or did I just mistaken the word “Captain” and “Commander” as rank, and actually they are not ranks at all?  They call Shields “Captain” because he is the captain of the ship, not because his rank is “Captain” which equal to colonel in army?  Well this is a trivial thing but confused me for a while.  Ahhhhh who started using the same word both as an occupation and a naval rank in English?  That guy should pay for my lost brain cells although he’s dead thousands of years ago!

Since poeple using this mod are likely to be Chinese speaker, the following instruction is in Chinese.

Sunrider General Discussion / Difficulty in understanding a line
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:15:56 pm »
I'm trying to translate the second part of this game and having a difficulty.

Quote
"Kayto burrowed his frow as he filled out the 60th equipment request form of the evening."
"Finally, he threw away his pen."
kay "Argh, there's no way we're gonna be able to finish all this!"
    ava "... ... ..."
kay "I'm sorry madam pres. But I am offering in my letter of resignation!"
kay "It has been a good year, and we have tried our darnest, but this is the end!"

Around line 20470 in script.rpy

Kayto burrowed his frow as he filled out the 60th equipment request form of the evening.

I don't know how to understand this line.  I cannot make out a meaning from dictionary of "burrowed his frow".  Anyone could help me with this?  What's the meaning of this?

When I finish my turn, the below problem happened.

I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

Sunrider General Discussion / Some code suggestions
« on: September 16, 2014, 07:07:23 pm »
I know I’m asking for too much… However if the main program could make some part of coding as below, it would help much with my translation MOD.

1.   In “screens.rpy”, if the menu hotspot could be made at same size as below
Code: [Select]
        hotspot (80, 405, 208, 50) action Start()
        hotspot (80, 472, 208, 50) action FileLoad("1", page="quick", confirm=False)
        hotspot (80, 537, 208, 50) action ShowMenu('load')
        hotspot (80, 598, 208, 50) action ShowMenu('preferences')
        hotspot (80, 666, 208, 50) action ShowMenu('bonus')
        hotspot (80, 730, 208, 50) action Quit()
Then I will be able to get rid of this file from my patch.  The only thing I need to change in this file is this hotspot thing because Chinese characters are not the same size as English ones.  I guess making every hotspot a little larger (actually longer) won’t change the visual effect for English menu.  But this means a lot for my translation otherwise I need to include this file in the mod for these hotspot thing.

2.    I had the problem with tooltips translation.  I wonder if there is a chance to make tooltips as pictures.  That would be the simplest way to avoid the Unicode problem.

I have advertised this game with my translation on one website I often visit.  People are interested in non-Japanese Visual novels.  However I haven't got any feedback about the game itself yet.
What I thought was use the excuse of translation to cheat for a beta access.  The new public release is around the corner so that doesn't matter now 8)

Mods / [Translation]Chinese Script based on 4.1 version
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:44:44 pm »
Although this version is going to be outdated very soon, seems I finally made it before the 5.x public release.

Based on website version 4.1
Not sure if doing good with Steam edition.

The download link is below.  This is a Chinese website since people using this would likely be Chinese.
http://pan.baidu.com/s/1i3iPDTb

Only script part translated.  Didn't touch parts such as battle.

Below is Chinese instruction.  Would be good if someone speaking Chinese could try and test this patch for me.  I didn't go through the entire game and not sure if everything works.

Sunrider General Discussion / Is there a plan for other languages?
« on: August 29, 2014, 01:42:06 am »
I recommended this game to some of my friends, but their first thought was “I don’t want to play a game in English”.

So is there a plan for some other languages?  I have downloaded renpy and found I can simply replace the dialogues in script with translations.  If there’s no such plan yet I think I can do volunteer translation into Chinese, with a slow speed though.  Provided I’m allowed to do this, I guess programmers may need to add Chinese fonts to make a Chinese version (now I see meaningless blocks in game when I changed dialogues into Chinese).  And to make a fully translated game I also need to translate the buttons, menus and such things other than script.  I have not found which files are they in yet.
However, if this is acceptable, I can start with script as first step.  When dialogues and battle instructions are translated, it is enough for playing while leaving other parts still English.

Game Play Balance / Idea about random side quests and some other things
« on: August 26, 2014, 08:16:32 pm »
I’ve finished playing the game on steam and found it amazing.  I like the free to play idea but still want some ways to pay for it.  What about selling soundtrack or wallpaper set?

Back to the game itself.  I enjoyed the gameplay, but felt frustrated when I finished the game and realized it’s just the opening of entire story.  What I expected was a finished storyline with at least one heroine’s ending.  I’m not saying the game is bad but you know… It made me really sad when I found every selection I made was just nothing and would make no change to the ending…

I started the game with normal difficulty but had to make it easy in later battles.  Money is always not enough for upgrades.  And side quests… I think there is only one in current game right?  Why not generate some random side quests which let players get some extra money between quests?  For example there are always some quests asking you to attack an enemy outpost / clear some pirates or escort some civilians.  Then let the player able to finish up to a number (3 for example) of side quests between 2 main events.  These side quests could be marked with different difficulty levels.  Like in an easy one, player only need to deal with some enemy ryders; A medium one has several battleships and a hard one may even generate new enemies.  The side quests could be generated randomly and would not do anything to the storyline.  Just provide some extra income for players and let them better upgrade their ships and ryders for the storyline battles.
