I agree with you on the difficulty ratings. Maybe changing their titles would give people a better idea as to how hard each one is going to be. Compared to other, similar games, Sunrider's Normal is a lot harder than the other Normals.
Perhaps "Hard" needs to be renamed "Nint*ndo Hard"? ;)

P.S.
I still LOL just at the memory of the "the research lead to some crazy breakthroughs for anti-aging facial creams." line.

There are a lot of funny lines in the recent chapters. Considering how quirky the cast is, Sunrider could probably make a good comedy story, actually. But having mostly serious stuff with some comedy thrown in at the right moments works pretty well, too.

The lag might be an issue with your computer, as, for the most part, others haven't mentioned any serious lag. I did lag a little on my old laptop, but that issue went away entirely once I got my new computer. What hardware do you have, if you don't mind me asking?

I don't mind.

Specs are as follows:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3, 2.13GHz
RAM: 3.00 GB
Graphics: GeForce 310M, 512 MB
Operating System: Windows 7, 32-bit version

It's a laptop, so I wasn't expecting mindblowing performance, but I played similar VNs/Strategy hybrids on it before (Sengoku Rance, Daiteikoku etc.), and didn't run into similar problems.

In retrospect, I should have specified that this is an issue related mostly to actually issuing commands - I sometimes get this "pauses" when it takes time for game to register that I clicked particular order button, or clicked particular sector of the map. The actual animations are still relatively fluid, sometimes more than command menu.

I actually have three other friends who ran into same issue; I can ask them their specs, but at least one is using a desktop much better than my crummy laptop. Additionally, the problem seems more common in later stages of the Beta; the first few missions are relatively smooth.

if you press shift-g in game you can choose your rendering method. openGL is the default but perhaps 1 of the other 2 options works better for you.
The game seems plenty playable on my own system but I have been hearing this from multiple people. Tom (the creator of ren'py) is working on efficiency improvements that should really help Sunrider.

I was playing this kind of turn-base games quite a lot recently  but the difficulty spikes in some missions are just mind blowing. I know, no one said that escorting a civilian ship from PACT fleet would be easy or warping straight into a system swarmed with PACT ships ... but cmmon those are first missions and its already Save&Load type of mission. It's impossible to advance to the edge of map when the enemy is throwing new ships and nukes every few turns.

Tried that and set it to a different option. Works much better right now, thank you!

Mission complete!  And man this place is packed.  I wonder what I'll buy with this much cash...

This is among my favorite SRPGs, no doubt about it!  In the end I think the balance is done quite well and it's nice to find a challenge like this in this day and age.  My heartfelt thanks to the development team!

Wow, you actually beat Hard Mode. That's... pretty impressive. You've done something 99% of the playerbase is never even going to attempt to do, much less succeed at. Of course, since Hard Mode is beatable, Samu-kun is going to make everything even harder next time... Really, good job, though. That's kind of amazing.

How did you do that? What difficulty are you on?

Please be careful not to fall into any holes in reality caused by my reality hole generator. If you do fall in though, I can assure you that there will be no adverse side effects except for the following: instantaneous mutation, loss of 1 or more vital organs, turning into banana pudding, amnesia, loss/growth of 1 or more limbs, additional vital organs, loss of DNA, insanity, hallucinations, destruction of the fabric of space and time, redundancy, redundancy, a craving for apples, the ability to see shinigami, for females: an erection lasting more than 4 hours, for males: extremely painful menstrual cramps, testicular inversion, gender swapping, the urge to watch my little pony, and/or death

I may rename "hard mode" to "ludicrous mode," if that's a better name for it.

Indeed, the game does lag more than what I want. But we're all waiting for Tom to release the next version of renpy, which he's been telling me will help with our performance issues.

Also, Graph is now our new champion. If I ever am in need of trial by combat, I know who to call! *salutes* I have never seen a whooping 7000+ cmd points earned from that mission! :D

Eh, you might be surprised.  I'm pretty sure a lot of folks around here were initially attracted to Sunrider for the VN aspect, but I'm sure SRPG veterans will be able to pull it off.  Based on the knowledge they've demonstrated I think Vaendryl and Kalduil can do it too, if they didn't already beat it before me.  It was tough, but fair compared to the Advance Campaign of the first Advance Wars.  Now that was a pain in the butt! ;D

...But if the enemy defense bonus gets added back into Hard mode it might be a different story.  >_>

How did you do that? What difficulty are you on?
Hard Mode.  Like I said before, if you nuke them before they nuke you, it's not that much different from Normal.  Hell raven's creed!

Turn 1: First I used Full Forward and I had the Alliance ships and Kryska move forward a space and fire kinetics at the 2 centermost battleships.  My aim was to score at least 1 hit on both of them, if I failed then Sola should pitch in, but if she doesn't need to then Awaken her.  Then I used 2 FlakOffs and finished off those 2 battleships.  (This took a little luck since there was at least a 30% chance of interception on each rocket. I should've gotten 120 Energy for Chigara) 2 battleships dead before the enemy even gets a move!  I think I also managed to kill the 2 bottom PACT Bombers on this turn, too.  Try to end with both Claude and Chigara covering the Sunrider with their shields since the Sunrider will draw massive aggro from having, y'know, nuked 2 battleships!  I saved most of my missiles for later.

Turn 2: Stuff was nicely lined up at the top, so I short-warped and used Vanguard Cannon.  Killed a PACT Mook and 2 PACT Bombers, and damaged a battleship and a carrier.  Keep firing kinetics and try to kill 1 more battleship on this turn.  At this point Sola should be doing an Awaken/snipe loop in her cozy spot in the corner.  Now start creeping to the right while keeping your units under Shield protection, since you'll see lots of Mooks until the Carriers are destroyed.

Turn 3: The missile frigates arrive.  Now dump your missiles on them, and you should wipe them out without having to divert units to the top and bottom.  The last of them went down during during Turn 4.  I used a repair drone here as Sunrider's HP is below half at this point.  I probably killed the last battleship here, too.

Turn 4 onwards: Keep creeping right, focusing on the Carriers, then the Cruisers when they show up.  Reapply Full Forward when it wears off, or don't, doesn't really matter.  I finished with all my ryders intact, so there's a good deal of leeway even if you weren't as lucky as I was.

Screenshots

Notable upgrades...
Hull plating mk5 for Sunrider, mk1 for Kryska, mk2 or 3 for others
Sunrider: Missile damage mk5 (~1300 to battleships, also missiles with 700 total base damage), Missile storage mk2
Liberty: Shield range mk2
Phoenix: Energy reactor mk5
Blackjack: Upgraded lasers and energy reactor a bit, though it didn't fit my strategy at all.

Obviously my strategy this time involved lots of rockets.  I lost some cash, but made up for it by amassing enough CP to use Full Forward on nearly every map, and Vanguard Cannon on around half of the maps!

This map is a race, you need to be advancing the Agamemnon to the right which each turn. If you do this, you should only have to deal with 1 wave of reinforcements, at worst , before you reach the edge and win the map.

Very nicely done! Congrats on your victory! Glad you are loving the game so much. Maybe you can give some insight into how you accomplished such a feat? I'm curious to know your playstyle. May try testing hard mode right alongside you. ^_^

On a side note... so much money! Are there reinforcements I don't know about? I only got 4575 total money gained... T_T

It appears that there are also some people good enough to actually wipe the map before the cruisers even show up... (Less money for more CMD points if you do it that way.)
