Title: Car Porn.
Post by: BlackStarLine on January 05, 2016, 11:49:27 pm
Considering people appear to be derailing the new tech thread with car imagery, I decided it would be more appropriate to have their own thread.

To begin with, I'll post some of my all time favourite machines.

Mercedes Benz 300SLR.

I removed my posts from the other topic. Sorry for derailing - I'll be more careful the next time.

I definitely prefer the classics. Don't like much the 1970s and the 1980s - too many edges. I do like, however, sport cars from the 1990s (I'd say mainly the Japanese models). As from contemporary, I like Audi - followed a bit their successes at Le Mans, and I do like their design - but I can't say there's something I'm particularly into.

Now, the pics.

That Superbird is actually a Roadrunner. The logo on the wing gives it away.

I LOVE Alfa Romeo. My dad had an Alfa Romeo Sprint 1.7 Quadrifoglio Verde.

Like this one
(http://i.imgur.com/gNSBMve.jpg)

It's a typical late 80's car with a lot of edges (not as edgy as a Volvo or a Mercedes-Benz), but I loved that car when I was a kid.
Unfortunately, my dad sold it when I was a teenager, so I never drove it.

That Ferrari 330 P4 you posted is very interesting and quite hard to manufacture since it requires a lot of metal bending.
(Such extreme deformations make the metal sheets very thin in some points and create a lot of weak spots in the body panels, which would be unacceptable by today's safety standards.)

I didn't absolutely know about that Alfa. It certainly looks interesting - it reminded me of another one of my favourites.
Lancia Delta HF Integrale, 1989
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ce/Delta_gruppo_A.jpg)

That Ferrari is - I believe - their last stand in the endurance scene. It's mostly famous for the win at the 24h of Daytona in 1967. It was certainly extreme, and certainly not mass produced (4 models in total? Or something like that).

Ah, the Delta Integrale... One of the best rally cars ever built. Worth a lot of money these days, last I heard they were going for £20k plus.

Thank you!

I was going to get around to making a thread for everything car related, but I chose to start with science and technology. Nice to see the reins being pickup, so the science and technology thread can be about what it is suppose to be about.

Again, thanks!

Let get this goin' where the rubber meets the road . . . The Treads!  8)

As an aside, I noticed the classics are quite the favorite. Don't get me wrong, the Mercedes Benz 300SLR is a beaut, but come on. Show the modern automotive engineers some lovin', too. Or not. Truly, whatever fits your pre-fer-anananance. Anyway, I shall be back to dominate the automotive realm in due time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And, I am back.

U WANT GOOD LOOKING CARS?

... I derailed the topic, didn't I?

Somewhat, but cars are always welcome. Feel free to add more. I see you favor more of the classics. I'll counter you with the other side of the spectrum: contemporary.

@BSL: I still think the original GT40 has better - simpler - lines. I don't like the over-complex design of the new version. Unneded.

I understand where you are coming from: somewhat of a purest, classic, simpler set of body stylization. Drop the points, archways, and angles. Leave the unadulterated bodylines, and we are good to go. However, I am under the impression that Ford's approach to reincarnating the GT into present day was well executed, at least in comparison to some other manufacturers. As I have said they maintained the prominent curves and body lines: The front bumper-to-hood body panel curve, the double hood inlets, the body line running from the front curve to the rear quarter panel inlets, the rear quarter panel inlets, so on and so forth. With the advancements in CAD, concept testing, machining, I believe the body changes, and the majority of all changes for the matter, have been for the better and are not un-necessary. I will setup some rehashings I think went well and not as much so.

Seriously, if you want to look at something the is complicated, and dare I say, un-necessary, look at the electronics and engine configuration of the new NSX. Ah mah gahd! What the Hell. It is just . . . wow!

Using this method of ranking them, I would go as far as to list the Ford's new rendition of the GT as an "Okay" to a "Good."

Well, technological advancements (metal-shaping, CAD, electronics...) let us create something that was unachievable, unthinkable, only 50 years ago. It's most definitely true.
I do like the new version of that Ford, I'm not saying it's bad, and it's clear they stayed true to the original. But... It's just my feeling and my own taste. The old car tells me much more, even being much less in any aspect. Simple lines, less curves, no twists. Essential and elegant.
For instance, I prefer this remake of the same car.

Yup, yup. Fair enough. The 2005 version is pretty snazzy, and it is as you say: a solid remake. It is also as you say "It's just my feeling and my own taste." Of course, that is completely understandable. At this point, it is only but a matter of differing preferences. Good point, good point. I guess it is just a matter of me favoring contemporary design over classic that is getting the best of me here. Oh well.

Welp, I am going to end up besmirching your DB5 with Bond's newest ride. Even if it is the most popular bond car.

Aston Martin DB10
(http://i.imgur.com/cNsxHWx.jpg)

I am really not surprised, though. The DB5 oozed the very essence of Bond. The car is now more of just an accessory, and it's not so much an integral part of Bond anymore. I mean, it is there, but it just doesn't seem to be "there." Meaning in the sense of it having a meaningful presence.

The enemies will never be able to see me when I do my 20,000 meter, top-down attack, because this pink, anime skin will perfectly blend in with the light-blue backdrop of the sky. Ah, so functional." In all honesty, I was like, "What the hell. That was unexpected." The narrative was all serious and such, and then this. It just entirely threw me off, but it was a heck of a pleasant surprise.

Ah! So, that is what happened to it. I completely forgot this thing existed. Wow! Wow. Unfortunate. At least some design inspiration made it into production vehicles. "Top Gear is the only magazine in the world to have driven it. It will remain so." Sad, but true.

Speaking of Mazda, I got the opportunity to see this bad boy in person. Then, it raced down the road from me at the Daytona International Speedway for the Rolex 24 At Daytona a week later. Good times.

Speaking of GM concepts, here is another bad bo(d)y V-12 that is inspired by the F-22 Raptor. Surprisingly enough, this offered experimental "displacement on demand": it can cycle down 2 or more cylinders, while operating. The Stingray owes its current implementation of this technology to this concept. Not bad for 2002.

SF Bay Area (I visited there at the end of last year) is pretty much Hybrid & EV city; I count more Prius than Corollas when I was there for a week. Not to mention all taxis are Escape & C-max Hybrids.

Teslas are quite popular here in Toronto, Canada. I see about two once each week.

I do see a lot of others though, Chevy Volt, several different body styles of Prius (I think there's 3?), Honda Insight, Nissan Leaf (I love those), Tesla (mostly the sedan), and like a bunch of regular models that have hybrid versions. Probably would see even more hybrids and electrics if I were closer to San Jose.

Wow the new MX-5 has such an aggressive stance compared with its predecessors. I like it.

So I took this picture last summer at a car show. I've mentioned my fondness of Chryslers before. If your familiar with these, you'll notice that this person put larger wheels on and removed the front bumpers in addition to the custom paint. It also appears to be lowered from stock height, but that might just be the grass that made it look that way. He didn't lift the hood (bonnet), so I'm assuming it's the stock V6 under there.

The new MX-5 is a refreshing taste of what a small car maker can do if they put their minds to it. Also I like while every new generation of cars are larger, heavier & more powerful, the Miata goes in the opposite direction...and that decision made it glorious.

As the the Chrysler/Plymouth Prowler, the car looks awesome but the 3.5 SOHC V6 it has is kind of a fail. For an American car looking like a 50s Rat Rod, I expected a V8 Hemi motor underneath, and to only learn it shares a similar motor to a Dodge Caravan is kind of sad.

Well I would point out that the power to weight ratio is not out of line, and there are many sports cars like Lotus or the NSX of that time without a v8. But this car isn't British or Japanese, so the lack of a v8 option is confusing I'd agree. Now when the car debuted in 98 there wasn't a modern Mopar hemi in production. I think the largest car engine Mopar had at the time besides the Viper engine was the one it used. Still though, to go to the trouble to design a modern hotrod but not offer an engine that matches the style is likely why it wasn't a huge success. So I'm disagreeing that it was a bad engine, but agreeing that the engine choice probably doomed its fate.

The power to weight ratio of the Prowler was fine, but I would have to disagree with the choice of engine and the comparisons you put up. The NSX had an excellent engine that produced upwards of 280hp+ & its DOHC VTEC design revved like a F1 car. The Lotus 2.2 turbo was a giant killer of the day and its output matched that of the Ferrari 348GTB & 993 Carrera during the 90s.

The Chrysler SOHC 3.5 was renowned for oil sludge issues due to poor PCV design, forcing a oil change every ~3000 miles.

I know Chrysler did a lot of cool designs during the Tom Gale period, but the products made during this time was terrible. I can personally attest to that as the first car our family had after coming to North America was a 1999 Neon that literally fell apart after 2 years (engine CEL, interior trim, electric windows, lights etc.) The next car (2000 Subaru Legacy) lasted until in 2011 the engine blew its head gaskets & rust issues due to salt use here up North.

Yup. For the longest time the Miata had been following that trend of growth in all dimensions. Mazda only recently (2015 model) trimmed the fat. You can tell the difference between these newer models and older, larger ones by looking at the lug nuts: newer ones have 4 as opposed to 5.

I know Chrysler did a lot of cool designs during the Tom Gale period, but the products made during this time was terrible.

About the Model 3...

The interior cleanliness is a nice refreshing change in complex controls. The screen is nice, but I'm not so sure about the decision to take away the dashboard; I don't want to check the central screen for messages & speed; it's a distraction.

The front grille-less design also feels like they left out something. Perhaps the mandatory front license-plate would fix that void. Also...the front-end REALLY reminds me of a mixup of Porsche Panamera (facelifted ver.) and the Mission E concept car.

Otherwise, a good looking design. I like the Targa Roof (a la 911) they employed on the rear section. Until more details are released (motor hp & tq, battery capacity, standard equipment, suspensions, brakes etc.) I will keep tabs on the Model 3.

Yes, yes. Following the unveil, Musk has been tweeting a bunch. He has released information about possible changes, what to look forward to, and their reasoning behind certain design decisions. He addresses some of your questions.

YES, yes, yes, yes, I IMMEDIATELY thought of a Panamera when they rolled them out.

It isn't a targa roof, it is a moon roof. At the very least a moon-roof-esk rear window.

They provide a good amount of information in the unveiling event. Nonetheless, the proposed range is 215 miles, with a 0-60 time of approximately 6 seconds. There have been interesting rumors and possibilities swirling around regarding the conservative dashboard. *cough, cough* autopilot I don't know how much of the unveil you watched, but autopilot will be standard, as well as supercharging capability. Here's a version of the news article I read early today: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-04/tesla-intrigue-deepens-with-musk-s-twitter-barrage .

Oh, that reminds me. I visited their factory in Vitoria (Spain) a few months ago.
As you can see on your picture, Vito is Vitoria's exclusive signature model. ("Vito" is just short for "Vitoria", obviously.) :P
However, they don't produce Viano anymore, but a modern remodel called V-class.
Vito is a cargo van and V-class is the version for passengers.

The factory is quite big and produces 3% of the Basque Country's GDP.
(The Basque Country is a relatively small region in Spain. Population: ~2 million, Area: 7,234 km2 (as big as Delaware, approx.))

I walked through the whole assembly line, which was quite interesting, but wasn't allowed to take pictures inside the building.

These are the pictures I took.

Yes, I've studied for a month at Université de Strasbourg in 2014. Between taking 11 credit hours and being in the hospital for 5 days, I didn't have time to do much traveling. Didn't even visit Paris or anywhere Spain despite my relative proximity. The only leisure trip I took was to Cardiff. (I was taking management courses, so this factory tour was an assignment.)

Very nice, very nice. The showroom floor seems to be somewhat sparse of cars. They could have at least spread them out and gave them different orientations to fill in the room a bit more, but slick cars nonetheless. I also assume those MB-Chrysler facilities from those globes now produce other things, since it is no longer Diamler-Chrysler, but who knows. I also didn't realize Diamler was so far into the aerospace industry that they manufacture satellites. Very interesting. By the way, what was that city layout you took a picture of? What was it a layout of?

And speaking of MB, I passed one of their showroom buildings in Munich, Mercedes-Benz Centre, on my way to BMW Welt.

I thought the Maserati was yours and you were talking about the Nissan Versa (?). :P

Btw, I noticed you don't have a front license plate. (They're mandatory in the EU. Look what they had to do to some Alfa Romeo models (http://i.imgur.com/JevS4Ww.jpg) to make them legal.) What happens if you enter a state that requires front license plates? Do you get a ticket?
Title: Re: Car Porn.

They're mandatory in California as well.. not sure where the Maserati has his... but you see a light colored rectangle in my lower left winshield, that's mine. The bracket that adapts the EU/JP mounting point to a US mounting point broke, so I keep it in my window to stay technically legal.

Problem with some European and Japanese cars too is that, because the shape is different, license plates can look weird on cars over here when they're designed to hold something long and short. This Audi for example where the EU license plate shape is kind of integrated into the design just looks goofy:

First time I've had something like this parked next to me.

In all honesty, I have seen so many of these on a day-to-day basis, that they have lost their novelty for me, BUT they are beasts, nonetheless.

About the license plate situation, like you've said, laws differ from state to state. For example, California and Florida. Yes and no, respectively. I would imagine that if you travelled to a state where a front license plate is enacted into law as mandatory, the authorities would give care to look at the rear plate to see where the vehicle is from. The state-specific graphics on the plates are obvious enough to differentiate them from a solid distance.

In Canada most license plates are of the narrow & tall variety. Some cars seems to be designed for such plates, other (most European cars are notable) have to have mounts fixed on them to be flush with the body.
Some cars like the Alfa Romeos just offset the license plates not to block their trademark grille. Another car that does this but for functional reason is the now-departed Lancer Evolution X which is a necessity given its large intercooler & air inlets on the front bumper.

I still have a firm belief BMW still doesn't do luxury as good as Mercedes, Audi or even Lexus. Sporty cars they are, but the 3 and 5 series both still feels a generation behind when it comes to interiors.

What I'm personally excited to see (other than the Jaguar XE) is this. Now I kind of understand why the ladies always lust after Italian handbags & clothes. Just look at her lines...

Yeah. They do have more elaborate vents, more gloss, stitching, dashboard displays, trim, etc. And, BMW is one of the three German giants and basically Mercedes-Benz's direct competition, so they should have been proving more competitive on the luxury front. But, what can I say, I just prefer BMW's overall package, as opposed to the competition. However, they have been working on upping the ante, since the release of the 4 series and i3. I also do prefer the "Reserved Luxury" kind of look, if you will. Mercedes-Benz always seemed a bit too flashy inside and out. Not a bad thing, but not my preference.

Love how the TZ2 had exposed leather(?) straps holding down the engine cover. The Montreal was an interesting design; the "eyebrows" on the headlamps are an unique touch; I wonder they operate.

My personal Alfa classic would be the Alfetta GTV6. The angular 80s design with the fastback profile & Alfa style just makes me smile. The older gents may like the 60s smoother Giulia GTV or GTA more, but I personally like more angular cars.

Kudos to this particular car in question; these 80s Alfa while are great looking & driving aren't exactly well built and can be considered everything BUT reliable. Restored in a country which Alfa only has very recently made a return to (and the 3.0 liter V6 swap similar to the South African cars) is nothing short of amazing.

That's definitely a custom build. If it was built in the US it probably has a Chevrolet LS9 or a Ford Racing engine underneath with a complete custom chassis/drivetrain.

If it was built outside of the US... God only knows what's underneath it... The syling doesn't look european so it's certainly not from one of the major european styling houses, so it won't be using a Ferrari or a Lamborghini as a base...

How can 3 people get inside that? It looks small! And how do they enter the car in the first place? :o

It also wouldn't be allowed to run in the Dakar as pretty much every vehicle that runs the Dakar has to be homolgated. That rendering is for a pure Dakar machine. They would have to vastly modify it for road use before even being considered for entry into the Dakar.

The regs explain it a bit better: http://netstorage.lequipe.fr/ASO/dakar/2016/reglements/REG_AC_DK16_UK_V_FINALE_VISEE.pdf

I saw the leaked footage of this car when it was first released. I had no idea what the heck it was and how it related to BMW, but now I see: NEW SUPRA: WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR!! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlnP5PeI2rE) You read it right. Long time no see, right?

Bonus points for the bottom bit, as the fictional Mt.Akina if you study the pass (and the infamous hairpins) is actually Mt. Haruna. Yes THAT Haruna; The IJN naming scheme dictated all of its as built large cruisers be named after mountains (Akagi was designed a BC, as are the Kongos as built).

The Tuscan was a really good looking machine. Pretty damn quick too. Although I certainly preferred the look of the Sagaris.

I have never heard of the Prius C... I think it's safe to say it's a US only model...

that's Surprising, the C is smaller than the regular Prius, would think it would be a lot more popular in the EU than it would be here. Americans aren't fans of smaller cars.

Some nice stuff. I like seeing classics done classily. Never really been a fan of outrageous shit being done to classic cars. Subtlety goes a long way in my eyes.

For example, I have the idea of making a sleeper out of a Mk.3 Ford Capri by utilising the running gear from either a Jaguar or a Mercedes-Benz.

I don't think Ford sold that in the US, the closest thing Ford had in the US during that time period was the Pinto. It's pretty rare to see somebody who has restored one as they weren't very popular (Americans especially back then preferred cars that were larger).

Here is some art I found of another one of my favorite sportscars:

Thread revival!

Recently family brought this. If you live in the UK or Japan this is likely a very common car for you. However since I live in Canada, I believe as of February 2018 I own one of ~170 in the entire country thus far, and as of today I still have not run into another one as of yet.

Brilliant vehicle - comfortable, pulls like a diesel (again Canada - our market does NOT have the 2.2 DI-D), serenely quiet and with father's 52km round trip, only ~6.5L/100km under Canadian freezing temperatures. Last Saturday we were hit with a major snowstorm and the car just breezed through it. No wonder 50% of UK plug-ins on the road is this vehicle.

Mitsubishi Outlander correct?

Yes. In fact we used to own a gen 2 Outlander V6. Great power, practicality & reliability, but abysmal fuel economy. This one is the PHEV version, and the under the me-too SUV body lies a powertrain setup with 3 electric motor/generators, a big HV battery + a 2.0L gasoline engine in a combination which makes even the Prius look ordinary.

Today I did an errand run using the car fully charged from home, picked up two packages at two separate locations, ate lunch at Ikea + top up & back home. A 55km trip...with ZERO gasoline used. Remember this is a 1900kg SUV, with AWD and costs 1/4 price of a Model X. A remarkable vehicle.

A lot of companies seem to be going the way of the PHEV... I suppose it might be cheaper to go that way rather than the traditional hybrid system...
